| Have you considered having a birth partner or birthing coach? Have you thought about using a midwife or doula? If you are just seeking information, you have come to the right place! There are several differences between the job description of these roles, and depending on what your needs are, one just might apply to you. Having a birth partner is growing in popularity because birth partners are there for you to assist you in non medical ways, i.e., lower back massaging, words of encouragement, etc. Birth partners are basically there for you and can even communicate with the medical staff for you. It is nice to have a birth partner that you can trust - they don't have to be professionals. A birth partner can be your mom, sister, friend, etc. Birth coaches are also good to have - their job description is just exactly what the name implies - a coach. They are there to really offer you words of encouragement and coach you through the birth process. Having a midwife means you have someone that is medically trained to deliver a child, and would definitely play a larger role in the whole birthing process than a partner or a coach. Midwives have been around for centuries, and what with the rise in natural, "green" living, more people are looking to midwives to help them through the birthing process. A Doula is in a league of her own - she is a woman that will aid you through birth like a coach and partner, but will also do postnatal follow up, which might include staying in the home with you, doing light errands, and helping out with the baby.
